Yeah.

However, traditional katana are considered national treasures and you need an export permit from the Japanese Ministry of Culture.

Every ordinary business can help you get such an approval, but the process takes a few weeks. So if it’s just a short holiday, you probably have to send it back. Never heard an export request was rejected, but lasts. This is not the first time the shops do, you are not the only foreigner who buys a katana on holiday. They’re doing it routinely for you.

Bedenke, Japanese katana begin at 2000€, mostly cost the simple 4000€, 5000€. And up no limit, find which for 20,000€ This is very strictly regulated which forge can forge as many.

I do not know Swiss law, but importing to Germany is not a problem. Consider the customs fees and import turnover tax.

Here so usual prices that you can expect there https://www.aoijapan.com/japaneseswords/katana/ starts at 300,000 yen and goes quickly into the 7 digit yen range. The shop here would like, for example, to log in before and say which harder one wants to look at it. You should plan that before.

Often antique katana are sold even without handle, tsuka, and divorce, saya(or only a simple one of wood, “shirasaya”). It is necessary to get ready if you want one, then it costs a minimum of €1000, more than €2000 for such a usual setup. Must be customized.

Sorry, but they’re not considered ‘national treasures’!

Yeah, that’s true, but you need an export permit for them anyway.

Hello Jort93,

have a connection question on German customs law. I bought a historic 350-year-old Katana and I’m currently waiting for export permission and then shipping. Should a historical sword be not exempted from customs and sales tax as a collector’s object or art object?

Thank you
Best regards

Art objects are taken relatively closely, paintings, statues, etc.

The inch should just be worth sword. But as I see it, they are suitable for 0% inch with Japan R & D

You still have to pay import sales tax.

I’d count on the full 19%.
