A RE7 is certainly available several times in Germany. If you are talking about RE7 in North Rhine-Westphalia (Krefeld – Köln – Hagen – Münster/Rheine):

There are no machines on the train. The train staff will at best sell you a ticket if there is no possibility to buy at the station.

Tickets are available at the vending machines as well as at special local sales points, which are partly located in the station, partly also in the vicinity or elsewhere. (Local tickets are also available in the DB Travel Center, outside VRR tickets within the VRR.) Otherwise also digital.

Egel which line, you can only buy tickets on the train

  1. if there are no switches at the station where you get in. also no machines
  2. if the switch is closed or an automatic machine is defective.

Some regional providers have machines on the train. I don’t know if that’s what you’re doing.
