Open up.

crochet a few small pieces to get in practice.

and then I would not crochet the deck in a piece, but composed of squares. the square I would make about 30cm tall or even a little smaller.

so you could also close at 6, 9, 12, 15 or 18 squares if you have no more pleasure and you still have a result with which you can start something and look pretty.

one crocheted in one deck also goes quite on the shoulders and the back and it is eagerly warm when crocheting.

you connect the squares with warp stitches.

you can practice it before.

I’m sure you made less and less stitches. Or your air chain was too tight. Make up a few rows and then continue to work as usual. Count best the stitches

I don’t know what stitches that are. Depending on the stitches, it’ll be fine.
