Can I return the mail order package unopened?

I ordered a tablet case for a tablet I ended up not wanting. I've now bought a different tablet and ordered a different tablet case from a mail-order company.

The first tablet case is already on its way. Normally, it's enough to simply refuse to accept the package from the postman. However, I've redirected the package to a pickup location within my post office.

So I go to the collection point and return the unwanted package to the counter.

Or do I have to go home, open the package, and attach the return label (if there is one at all, otherwise I have to request it first).

If you do not pick up the package from the pick-up station, it will be returned to the sender after the storage period (in Germany at the DHL 7 days).

This is comparable to a “normal” return, but can lead to logistical “requirements” for some consignors. The safest way is actually that package to accept, open, use the return sticker and send back.

You don’t even have to go home. Just open the package on site, get the return sticker out, add the package again, papp it over the original shipping sticker (or remove the old one before) and return the Gedöns to the mail store.

Does that have advantages? Yes:

  • the consignor knows the shipping number of the return (the consignment number is also known for refusal of acceptance or non-release, but is sometimes not recognized as return)
  • the consignor will return the return faster (because the retention period will be reduced)
  • you get the credit faster

If it’s in the post office, you just say at the switch that you refuse to accept. So the package goes back to the sender.
