Should something like this be taken seriously?
Hello
We're on a school trip, and one of our classmates couldn't sleep for the first two days, a total of almost 50 hours. I don't know why. But tonight, it worked. Half the class was sitting around a bungalow talking. He was too. During that hour, he got incredibly sleepy and started talking ridiculous nonsense, as if he were on drugs. For example, he talked about aliens that eat bubble gum. On the other hand, some people took advantage of this to ask more "intimate" questions, and as far as I know, his answers were honest/believable—nothing to do with bubble gum-eating aliens.
After almost an hour, almost everyone was in their bungalows, tired or sleepy. Only one friend, he and I, were left sitting together. He was still in a strange, and for us, amusing, half-sleep. I asked the small group if anything was planned for the fall break. And his answer was:
"Hmm? what? I'm going to commit suicide. Wow, mhm."
We both laughed after that answer. It sounded just funny. Shortly afterward, he fell asleep, and we somehow managed to carry him to our bungalow. His bungalow was much too far away. Apparently, he can't remember anything.
My question is, should his suicide statement be taken seriously, or was it just sleep-deprived nonsense? Since I don't want to cause unnecessary drama, I didn't mention it to anyone, including my girlfriend who was there.
How do you assess this? What would you do?
Any suicide announcement should be taken seriously.
