Is Italy the country where the 80s had a musical impact well into the 90s?

Just look at how refreshingly "normal" women in Italy were in the mid-90s. And how romantic they used to be, and what kind of 80s-inspired songs and chord progressions appealed to young people.

I find that shocking, considering the decline we've seen in this regard just five to ten years later.

Yes, that’s what you can say – the Italians have often made music in the 90s, which could also come from the 80s. The only exception were Italo Acts produced internationally – for example Albano and Romina Power (“Torneremo a Venezia” from 1993, where Dr. Bernd Opinioner would have mixed with him or Dietmar Kawohl, I don’t know exactly) or Pupo (“La Notte” from 1996) or Eros Ramazzotti.

What typical Italian stars like Fiorella Mannoia, Alice or Lucio Dalla produced in the 90s was often quite 80s-by-year – but it was consistently very high.

In France, by the way, it was the same – what Michel Sardou, France Gall, Didier Barbelevien and Patricia Kaas brought in the early 90s, was actually also 80s pop music of style and sound.
