In any case vocal music (cantare = singing), but also accompanied by instruments.

Cantatas are mainly vocal music, in baroque in particular those with difficult concertant vocals, but actually always with just as independent instrumental voices; in particular as a basic stock 2 violins and basso continuo. They were also called at the beginning when vocals are sometimes Concerti ecclesiastici or church concerts.

Vocal music, so singing. Cantata comes from Latin cantare = singing.
