It’s a continuation.
And yes, there is a series about Sarah Jane called ‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’ and it plays in the same universe as Doctor Who. The events of the series happen after the second season of Doctor Who 2005.

There are many characters/alias from the Classic series before and some old events are mentioned occasionally. But it was made to win new fans without having to watch Classic. There is no need for any prior knowledge 🙂
