The psyche differs from traditional organ systems such as the cardiovascular system or the digestive system. While traditional organ systems consist of physical structures and organs, the psyche is rather a interaction of mental and emotional processes controlled by the brain and the nervous system.

The psyche affects our behavior, our emotions, our thoughts and our perceptions and is closely linked to the function of the nervous system. Nevertheless, many scientists and physicians consider the psyche not as a separate organ system in the traditional sense, but rather as a function of the nervous system, especially of the brain.

However, mental health is just as important as physical health and both are often connected to each other. A healthy cardiovascular system can, for example, have positive effects on mental health, and vice versa, mental health can affect general physical health.
