that depends on how to evaluate sustainability. In the financial sector, ESG ratings have proven themselves, where the environmental aspects, social issues and the control bodies (governance) are assessed.

The environmental characteristics of Ethereum are as follows.

annual power consumption: 0.4 billion kWh (Bitcoin 125 billion kWh)
Electric scrap: 261 tonnes (Bitcoin 9’600 tonnes)

According to ESG rating, Ethereum can be considered to be sustainable after the conversion of your consensus algorithm from PoW to PoS (reduction power consumption by 99 %) in September 2022 with an ESG rating from B, although there are blockchains that are even better off during the ESG rating.

Is the blockchain Ethereum sustainable?

No.

What should a digital currency have to do with “sustainability”? “Sustainability” is not a property (a product or a company). Sustainability is aBehavior.

Sustainability means no longer removing a natural resource from the environment, as it grows in the same place over the same period.
