Is the old Canon EF 75-300mm IS USM I F4.0 – 5.6 from 1996 still recommended for sports photography?

I still have the lens in my closet, but I haven't used it in many years. It's too long for my 7D II. But it would be ideal for a full-frame camera. The only question is whether the AF can still keep up with sports photography.

With USM lenses the autofocus is actually fast enough

What kind of sport do you photograph?

A light-strength lens is of course better suited for sport. I see the problem rather than the AF. But with a corresponding camera, such as a 5D Mark IV, this goes already.

Yeah, I’m not worried about the AF at handball, more about the light. I photograph horse races, there’s plenty of light in the normal case.

What prevents you from trying the autofocus on your 7DII? Then you have to go a little further if you have an equivalent of 120-480mm too much zoom.

Turn the problem differently!

You will not only buy a full-format camera for this one lens. Then it would be more sensible to mutilate the lens if it is not usable for your purposes!

So if you have them anyway (for whatever reason), then sneak the lens on it and you know it in no time!

If I’m reading what you’re driving with F2/8 lenses for ISO values, I can’t imagine that you’ll get lucky with an objective, which already blows half as much light in the smallest zoom range
