Is that true?
The internet says that for certain stages of cancer, you have a certain percentage chance of survival within five years. For example, if I have stage 3 cancer and the internet says I have a 20% five-year survival rate, does that HAVE to be true? Or could I live another 10 or more years?
A statistics is a statistics. No more and no less. There can be statistical life expectancy from diagnosis 5 years and the next day it is over. Or only in 10 years. Or never “due”
Ui, there was someone in math but sick.
20% survival rate means that 100 patients with cancer live at this stage after 5 years (or whatever the indication is) 20. 80 have died in time.
If you are one of the 20%, you can die after 5 years and a day or live several decades.
If I live decades after 5 years I am not under the 20%
Yes.
That’s different. This can also go much faster, so your treating doctor should tell you that because he can better assess you and the stage of your illness. In some cancers, this is rather fast, with others you live a little longer.
You can also be 100 years.
