Is my tooth dying?

Hello, 5 days ago I ate something sour and then had extreme toothache on the right side, both on the top and bottom. It's a throbbing pain, and I can feel it in my face and jaw as well. I've now been to the dentist, but he just rubbed some gel on it and prescribed me a jelly. I'm still in pain, and I don't know if his treatment was successful. I'm worried that I'm waiting too long and my teeth will die. Is it common for dentists to just clean teeth? I mean, doesn't there need to be more done?

That's not the point. I still have very strong pain. I thought you'd give the patient antibiotics or put a filling in. He didn't even examine me properly.
