Is my external hard drive broken?
Hello folks,
I own a Toshiba Canvas Basic 1 TB USB 3.0 external hard drive, which I purchased in 2017. I've used it daily since I bought it, and it's already seen a lot of reading and writing.
Today I set up a virtual machine (50 GB vDisk) with Linux Mint 20 on the drive. During the Mint upgrade, I noticed that it takes two hours for 3 GB, which is definitely too long. Also, the machine keeps crashing, which is odd because Linux Mint is very powerful, even when running on a crutch PC.
Since I suspect the disk is defective, I installed the Blackmagic Disk Check and tested the disk's capabilities. I received the following results:
(Test data volume: 1G)
Write: 30 – 40 Mbps
Read: 20 – 30 Mbps
Now I ask myself?
Is this normal, or is my hard drive broken? I'm not an expert in this area, so I need your help!
Thank you for your answers
Try CrystalDiskInfo and send me a picture of it
Hi! The average values for external USB hard drives are still in the “normal” range, although, of course, with an SSD and correct connection, considerably faster speeds could be achieved.
Otherwise, however, it may be that the read-write heads are still in order, but you have a damage at individual points on the surfaces so that the HDD only becomes slow as soon as it wants to use this area.
Either way: quickly secure data and if necessary replace HDD.
