Is it disrespectful to talk on the phone during class?
I was on the phone for exactly 54 seconds during physics class today. The teacher got really angry and said it was incredibly disrespectful. Now he wants to quiz me next class, but I'm not interested. Physics comes easily to me, and the subject is easy. Last year I finished with a 1.3, and I'll probably get one this year too, so that doesn't worry me.
What's on my mind, though, is whether this is really disrespectful. A colleague had a free period, got a pizza, and just wanted to know if I wanted one too… (I ordered Diavolo^^)
Is a short, quiet phone call during class really disrespectful? Several teachers have told me…
Yes, it's incredibly disrespectful… and it's frightening that you don't realize it. You have little self-reflection/empathy.
Imagine if everyone was on their phone at random, even when you wanted to say something or follow the lesson… That certainly wouldn't be nice. It's disrespectful to the teacher, but also to your fellow students – because it's simply disruptive and unnecessary. Even your personal need for food isn't urgent; you would have survived without it.
There are social conventions/rules of politeness… and then there are school rules. In a professional environment, you could have even gotten into serious trouble as an employee.
Of course, that's disrespectful. If it's important, step outside for a moment (if you're expecting an important call, it's best to do so at the beginning of class), and otherwise, just leave.
You have to remember that your teacher is just a human being who stands there, does his job and at least wants his students to listen to him and not disrupt the lesson.
I like listening to my teacher, but I also like eating pizza. It's a conflict.
Jaja, eh scho wissen. Troll woanders!
Trollen?
Es ist eben Fehlverhalten und dementsprechend gilt das als respektlos.
Class is class. Cell phones are not to be used unless the teacher has authorized them for classroom use.
The mere fact that one might have to seriously ask oneself whether it is disrespectful is evidence of ignorance and a lack of manners.
Yes, that's extremely disrespectful. Using cell phones in class is completely wrong. It's truly shocking how little empathy you obviously have for the situation.
I would have confiscated my cell phone for the rest of the semester. That's it, that's it.
You've definitely violated the school rules. A punishment is appropriate. Turn off your cell phone during class.
No, completely normal. Sarcasm says hello.
Let’s just ignore the second sentence.
That you are not completely alone was to be expected🤣
Ich spreche gerne im Pluralis Majestatis, ja.
…and then incapable of doing something like that *discreetly*, e.g., as a text message on a silent device…
If everyone were to make a quick phone call, there would always be unrest and distracted people in the room.

I don't really like texting; I prefer phone calls. Texting leaves a mark on me that has led me to problematic situations with other people.
Hopefully, by now you've learned that making phone calls also leaves a mark on people's opinions of you.

Your teacher did absolutely the right thing. This is a complete disgrace.
Wieso zum Sigma?
Yes – it is disrespectful – that you even have to ask something like that, surprises me a bit
Yes, of course. It's forbidden and considered a disruption of class.
If you want to make a phone call (for something urgent, for example), you should contact your teacher and ask if you can use the phone outside the classroom.
Sorry, I just quickly ordered a pizza…?
He shouldn't get so upset…
Unfortunately, my best physics teacher left last year. He had a hearing aid and bad eyesight. I often spent 15 minutes or more on the phone with him, and he didn't notice. He was his favorite student.^^
Yes, I just ordered a pizza…no hate, but that's very disrespectful as a student. And on top of that, you took advantage of your old teacher's disabilities. Very nice (NOT!)
Hey, we got along great. I emailed him often, got top marks, and always diligently shouted out the right answer.
The rest did whatever he wanted. He always stood in front of my table, and my colleague and I ran the place together.
At the end of the school year, he gave me his private email address and we still write regularly.
I won't let anyone tell me that! But good old Wolfgang also had his weaknesses…
I would have taken your phone away from you during the conversation. That's brazen and disrespectful. Your parents can come over and take the phone back.
The legal situation is complicated. After class, I'm entitled to use my mobile device again…
I know the relevant paragraphs by heart, so I would have stopped that.
Yes, it's just a shame that you were on your phone in class and not after school, so he has every reason to take the thing away from you.
Keep dreaming, the school rules apply to you too
In Hesse, it is allowed to be taken away until the parents come so that an educational discussion can be held
But we are not in Hesse, bad luck
And for you as a would-be teacher: The school rules and legislation clearly state that cell phones must be ready for collection after class.
Sorry big guy
Dear Max, put yourself in the shoes of a teacher who is simply doing his duty, and the question will answer itself. Of course, that's disrespectful.
Yes. It is. It's very unfortunate that you don't get it yourself. Has your upbringing failed so badly?
Ja, es ist respektlos und sogar ein Grund, dich vom Unterricht auszuschließen.
Respektloser geht es kaum noch!
Ja ist es.
Wieso?
