I only use Facebook for the bonuses of some video games, otherwise usually not. If you want to search people from 40, Facebook is also very practical. I found my math teacher there. But otherwise I don’t use Facebook.

If you think about it, it's more geared towards commerce than communication.

But for almost everything there is a free open source alternative or another portal.

In fact, that's no longer the case on YouTube: There's simply no other video platform. There used to be MyVideo, but it lost out to YouTube.

But it wasn't necessarily open source like Linux, it was just as commercially oriented, which is why it was discontinued.

For browsers there are:

  • Chrome
  • TOR ( free browser)
  • LibreWolf ( free browser)
  • Brave ( competitor browser)
  • Internet Explorer/Microsoft Edge ( competitor browser)
  • etc.

Search engines have:

  • Google
  • Yahoo! ( competitor search engine)
  • Bing ( competitor search engine)
  • duckduckgo ( free search engine)

For operating systems there are:

  • Windows
  • Linux Distros ( free OS)
  • MacOS ( competitor OS)
  • ChromeOS ( competitor OS)

Only on video platforms this is not the case:

Maybe with TikTok or Facebook videos and other short videos, but no real alternative video platform in the format of YouTube . There are only small, ad-laden competing video platforms like Dailymotion or Vimeo, but no free video platforms.

But people don't notice that…
