Is hard drive partitioning worthwhile?
To be more precise: Is such hard drive partitioning worthwhile?
C: for system Windows and software 250 GB
D: for games
I'm asking because I'm running out of memory on C for the second time now, and unfortunately expanding C is only possible with third-party software.
Have Windows 11.
I have on C: 200GB Windows and Apps SSD1
D: Games 730GB SSD1
E: 4TB HDD
Keeps the advantage when windows fail you can format C: easy and still have all the data. Needs to set up more manually with the paths.
Sytempartition C: I would make up at least 512 GB. 250 are a bad joke.
In my two computers are:
NVME1 512 GB for Linux,
NVME2 512 GB for Windows,
HDD 3 TB for data and games with access from Linux and Windows on it,
2x 2.5 inch drive inserts (exchange drives) as extensions for further SSDs or HDDs.
installed.
In addition, a Synology NAS in Raid1 with 2x3TB for multimedia.
Another NAS with 2x1TB as data grave for documents, photos etc.
A partitioning is most worthwhile for storing data. If your own files are on D: you can format C: and make the system flat without having to replay your data afterwards.
At least in theory. In practice, this is quite normal with Linux but with Windows still a lot of “basic” especially when you do things like pers. Settings, browser profiles, etc.
Comes to your abuse
My rule: 500GB NVMe as C and Rest on SSD and HDD
Yes, I wanted to make 250GB really no longer enough
I’m sure it’s not enough, just when the annual update comes, it takes 100GB of free space on C
For Windows, partitioning in most cases has no advantage. With Linux “mag” that look different, but there it is doubtful (in view of the very large plates nowadays)
just because you partition your hard drive, guess it’s ne ssd, now this has no more memory.
what you can do is add an additional HDD or SSD (if space is) and then pack your games
According to my previous experience, a division of the system plate to 2 or more partitions for desktop operation is less sensible, especially if you have multiple hard drives anyway.
Ever thought about a new hard drive?
Yes, but I still have just about 500 GB on D, which I would like to use for the first time.
