Here’s my thoughts with 60 years. I have been working for over 30 years and almost exclusively traveling abroad around the globe. With English I have absolutely no problem and have spent the last 30 years probably more time abroad than in Germany. I also speak 3 other foreign languages and all languages have one thing in common. The better you can speak the more your counterpart (when he is a native speaker) adapts to your knowledge and takes less and less consideration. It never stops and even after 50 years English (incl. school English) I am always required and sometimes annoyed that I cannot express certain details and subtleties as I like or actually do words lack. In addition, the school English is only spoken in the Greater London area. You don’t understand anything in Wales and you think you’re in another country. The whole is repeated in some states in the USA or when you speak English with Indians (also native speakers) or Japanese. Then there are the whole phrases which are as numerous in English as in German. You don’t learn them at school. A dictionary only helps a little. Also, no such good translation program will help you if you want to pack irony in a set during a talk. Until you start dreaming in English or Spanish etc. years pass and usually have to be away from Germany for a long time.
There is one phase in which learning is a bit more difficult than in many other languages: pronunciation and writing is not consistent.

It is more a natural process than a tough challenge.
