Is a clean home office setup possible in addition to the gaming setup?
I would like to set up a home office setup. Currently, I have the following situation:
- I'm bothered by the remote desktop connection to the PC in the office, so I (presumably) want a NUC on which I can mount the employer's network drives so that I can then work on the NUC when I'm in the home office.
- I have a gaming PC, 2 monitors, mouse (wireless Logitech G502 X Plus) and keyboard (wired)
I want to go to my desk and continue to have only one keyboard and one mouse there. As soon as the NUC turns on, the mouse and keyboard inputs should automatically go to that NUC (the gaming PC remains off). Do I need some kind of splitter, and how much will this affect the input lag of the mouse and keyboard while gaming?
To keep the setup as clean as possible, I want to hide the NUC as much as possible. Either screw it under the desk or mount it behind a monitor (there seem to be NUCs with VESA mounting options). The problem is that both of my monitors are attached to a monitor mount, and the VESA holes are already occupied. However, I could get a monitor arm with three mounts for that. Since I'll hopefully no longer be able to see the NUC, I'd like to start it via Wake On LAN (preferably with Alexa).
What are your experiences?
I had the same situation.
I connected my monitors with DisplayPort to my PC and with HDMI to the company’s laptop.
For mouse and keyboard I have one USB Splitter. II can’t find any delays.
This actually works pretty well, as long as I’m only connected to a PC, as soon as both are on, I can switch the USB Splitter easily, but it still has to switch the monitors manually. (Although splinters also exist, where I can also connect monitors. But I’m afraid that the image quality suffers from it and they’re also more expensive)
I finally figured out that I can only have a computer switched on at the moment. That’s pretty good.
Thanks for the feedback.
I think I can live with the fact that only 1 PC can run or I have to switch the monitors manually.
on the USB splitter are also only keyboard and mouse (in each case illuminated?). does the splinter also create another device or a USB stick or so or do I have to buy a splinter with additional power supply?
With me this went with illuminated feeler, normal mouse, headset and USB stick. But if the power supply is not enough, the linked splitter also has a USB-C input (but I have never used it before)
Just before you waste your time and money for the solution you’re thinking of:
Not all employers allow any employee account to be incorporated into a company network. This is what you should clarify in advance if this is allowed by the employer’s IT policies (some reason will be that you currently have to work / work via RDP on the computer in the office).
Thank you for the hint, yes, of course I have to explain.

There are switches for
would a USB switch not be enough to share the mouse and keyboard with both PCs? or arises with a KVM less input delay?
I think the monitors are automatically switched from DP1 to DP2 for example if DP1 has no signal but DP2 one.
if this is the case with your monitors, then you only need a USB switch
I got two notebooks on my home office. my private and one of the company.
I picked up a kvm splinter on the keyboard, mouse and monitor. with simple button commands I can always switch between the two, but have the same devices (monitor, mouse, keyboard) for use
