Is a 3rd dimension possible in a 2-dimensional world?

So, I was wondering if you play a game like Minecraft, for example, then it has to render 3D chunks in this 2D game, right? So it always renders a 32x32x32 block area, or more, depending on the settings. Is that correct, or am I just imagining it, or how can I understand this?

In such games, only the motion vectors are two-dimensional, which does not qualify for the “two-dimensional world”. A real chess game is therefore also three-dimensional.

As far as I see it without having played minecraft, it is a 3d game. In a 2D game it depends on whether they model the environment/objects in 3D or 2D. There is no compulsion to three dimensions.
