Instead of lucid dreaming, sleep paralysis, why?

Whenever I try to achieve a lucid dream before falling asleep (using the appropriate techniques), I lose control of my body. However, I don't fall asleep; I remain conscious, thus failing to achieve a (lucid) dream. Why?

^Because you’re buming your natural sleep rythm, your brain can’t properly coordinate the fall-in process and then you’ll provoke any horror trip hallucinations
