People in India are called Indians. Indians are another people.

In English the term was the same: Indians (the reference to Columbus already came in other answers). Today the original population of Amerkas is called Native Americans. In my opinion, what is completely justified, considering who has been introduced (at any rate in my culture) as “Indians”.

Indians live in India, Indians in North and South America.

That the terms sound similar is no coincidence. When Columbus landed in America, he thought he was in India. So he called the inhabitants of Indians.

But they should have been called Indians at the beginning if Columbus hadn’t gone

But only because Columbus thought he had arrived in India.
