In many of his poems, Günter Kunert has captured the GDR and its government. A good example of this is his poem "Instruction to the overthrow of the government" which he published in 1966. There he gives in a satirical way tips for a peaceful revolution against the SED regime.
In another poem by him called "The Clouds" from 1971 he criticized the censorship and suppression of freedom of expression. In it he describes how the clouds move and uncensored over the sky, unlike the oppressed population.
