I would like to go to another city just for a day. What is the best way to do this without a hotel?
And then walk there. What's the best way to do that without looking for a hotel? I want to go back in the evening because I don't have any money for a hotel. I'd take a train.
You just need to choose a destination and then figure out the best way to get there, which train connection, etc. You can go early so you can see as much as you like, and then return in the evening. Depending on the route, you may have to travel a lot or less. Also, pack some food and drink along the way so you don't have to buy expensive things. And once you've chosen a destination, you can also check out the city's attractions and then visit them.
It's always better in the summer because it stays light longer, so you can stay longer. We often do this in the spring/summer: pick a city and spend a day there and back. It's fun, and you learn a lot of new things.
Thank you for your answer. Do you look at the destination on a map, or do you have an app that shows you how to find your way around using the city's public transport?
I check the internet beforehand to see what's available, and the rest is often spontaneous. For public transportation, I use the Deutsche Bahn app. You don't need multiple different ones, just one is enough, and it always shows you exactly which connection you can take.
You choose the city you want to visit, buy the necessary train ticket, and find the appropriate connection. On the morning of your trip, you arrive at the train station on time, board the appropriate train, and travel to your destination. You may have to change trains. You get off the train at your desired destination, spend a pleasant day exploring your own interests, preferences, and needs, and then take the train home in the evening, or whenever you feel like it.
I always do this in the summer. When it's warm, you can spend the night outside. But not necessarily just for safety reasons.
In the morning, take the first train that takes you to your desired destination, and in the evening, do the same thing in reverse (then take the last connection). An alternative to hotels is to stay in youth hostels or similar accommodations; it doesn't necessarily have to be a hotel for €100 a night…
Going out is a good idea, but just to be on the safe side, take the second-to-last connection back in case something happens along the way, such as a breakdown. You could then look for alternatives, but on the last one, you might accidentally get stranded somewhere and not be able to get away.
Yeah, very good suggestion, spending the night at a train station isn't exactly desirable…
Then you choose a city, buy a return train ticket and take a walk there between trains.
Where exactly is the problem?
It's best to get up very early. Depending on how far you're going, you'll have to travel a lot. You'll be tired at around 4 a.m., but that will pass with new impressions, and you'll be back in the evening. Bring provisions.
Cool idea! Maybe someone from the community will contact you and let you stay overnight.
Erster Zug hin, letzter Zug zurück.
