My dog has a corneal injury. Does anyone have experience with this?
Hey,
So, this is about a 6-month-old German Shepherd. The dog actually belongs to my relatives, but since the family is, let's say, "overwhelmed" with the dog, I'm looking after him. The problem is: I live with my sister in an apartment where dogs aren't allowed. (Cats and smaller animals are, though.) After much deliberation, I decided to give the dog to a good friend.
Yesterday there was an emergency. My sister had an allergic reaction and had to go to the hospital. My friend took care of him. She took him for a walk, and everything was fine until yesterday evening. She called around evening and said the dog had a cloudy, milky eye. Apparently, a cat had scratched his eye. She immediately went to the hospital, and the vet said it was a corneal injury. The dog would have to stay in the hospital and undergo surgery (conjunctival transplant).
We're allowed to pick him up again this evening, and he's been given painkillers and eye ointment. Does anyone have experience with a corneal injury and surgery?
I ask for helpful answers!
Deep or even perforating (separated) skin injuries must be immediately operatively supplied, otherwise infections arise in the eye, which may lead to loss of the eye.
Superficial corneal injuries cure within a few days (latest after a week) with appropriate local treatment. If this is not the case, an eye specialist should be consulted. A wound healing disorder is caused by non-optimal healing conditions and requires special treatment.

I think it’s a deep corneal injury. Since he came to the clinic as soon as it went, and as he was quickly operated, his chances are good that he can see again, right?
Short info: You are here in a Laienforum. Veterinaries would not answer this question here, but only if they had treated the dog.
Thank you, I just wanted to answer.
Please don’t push the dog back and forth. I want him to stay with your sister.
We’re not TA and we can’t judge the damage. Just wait.
The dog cannot stay with us, because dogs are not allowed in the apartment.
