Plugging one output into another output cannot work.
You need an HDMI input. There are frame grabbers that convert HDMI signals so they can be saved to the hard drive and, of course, displayed simultaneously, but they're quite expensive. It's cheaper to buy a used office monitor on eBay for well under €50.
You can also buy an external USB drive and plug the DVDs directly into it to play them on your PC/laptop. This makes more sense, especially since you can burn a DVD to give someone data without them having to return the empty drive.
