How true to life does a fictional story have to be?

Hello, I'm currently writing a fictional story in which a short section depicts the 17th century. The rest is modern, but how true to the truth does this section have to be?

And what would happen to a street performer in the Holy Roman Empire back then if he hit a rich merchant in public at a witch burning? Would he be arrested, or what would happen to him?

If it should be realistic, it should be true for everyone on the oil original.
Probably a street artist would threaten a notary, torture and in the worst case a public execution.
