How to find the right course of study?
I'm currently in my second semester of law school, and I'm actually quite happy with it. I just made that choice back then because I didn't think an FSJ (voluntary social year) would make sense after graduating high school. I wanted to get a taste of student life instead.
Because the decision was made so arbitrarily, I constantly ask myself whether I really need to "put myself through this" to be happy, given that legal training takes a comparatively long time, is difficult, and after eight years, I could end up without a degree. My problem was that with many other degree programs, I didn't have a career in mind, just random English terms. For example, with business administration, I didn't know how to choose my focus correctly so that I wouldn't have problems later on in the job market.
Additionally, my age puts a lot of pressure on me, as others already have a bachelor's degree at 21, and I still don't have a degree. I actually didn't want to study in my hometown and wanted to move away, but I had no idea that I would find the degree, except for public law, so interesting.
While studying law is quite demanding and requires a lot of work, it also offers many career opportunities (especially if you achieve a top grade). As a lawyer, for example, I spent my entire career in higher education (university planning/student advising/lecturer). If possible, try to start a doctorate during your legal traineeship (assuming you achieved a top grade in the first state examination). A doctorate generally significantly improves your career prospects.
