How much SSD storage does a gaming PC need these days?
Hello. I wanted to ask you what you think about how much storage space a gaming PC needs these days.
Unfortunately, I've come to the conclusion that I can no longer manage with 1 TB M.2 because all the games are simply too big.
What do you think? Thanks in advance
I currently use a 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD, but the system is also from 2018. I have always had a TB, but I also have a Gbit line, which is why I don’t have to leave everything on the record due to the fast downloads. 100GB are thus quickly downloaded, which is why I now tend to uninstall rather than at the time before the Gbit line.
Meanwhile, however, it is so that I get 1TB too scarce, I get through with it, but with 2 TB it would be much more comfortable. The reason is primarily the ever larger game files you mentioned.
My next system is definitely equipped with 2 TB. I could easily retrofit with an SSD, but I don’t want any more drives in my system. I have two M.2 slots, but only one of them is able to control the higher speeds of the M.2. The second M.2 would work approximately on the level as an ordinary SSD, however, that is not worth the money for an M.2.
My next system is therefore equipped with at least 2 TB and on the board should be available at least one further M.2 slot on which the maximum data rate is also possible. Then at least the option remains open in case of need to expand further storage space.
Purely related to gaming I would say is the maximum what you could need at 4TB. Even with slow internet and correspondingly higher need to buffer several (also larger) games, I think 4TB is absolutely sufficient. I would go so far and claim that even 2 TB would be completely sufficient and for someone who wants to play only a very manageable number of games also 1TB long enough.
Do you think an upgrade to 2 TB M.2 is worth ~130€?
If you need it, yes.
I would get me a semi-sized (e.g. 1TB) NVMe SSD with PCIe 3.0/4.0 for Windows, programs, the most important games and possibly files. There you have a very good performance of the SSD.
I would then get another SATA SSD with, for example, 1TB or 2TB. There the remaining and partly very big games will be added.
Even if SATA SSDs through the SATA protocol to approx. 550MB/s are limited, it is enough. Small files can still be read quickly. At the charging speed it may be only a few seconds difference at all. You save money from SATA SSDs.
The SATA SSD can be either in M.2 or 2.5 inch format.
My compilation looks as follows:
Saving everything to a single SSD is quite stupid. Last but not least, a Windows update made the entire operating system unusable. It could not be loaded or repaired. Anyone who has everything on a single plate in such a case starts sweating at this point. I just set up the Windows SSD, reassembled the OS and had everything back as before. The personal data and games were all where they were before.
I had the 500GB M.2 and 1TB SATA SSD from my previous PC, which I would not have bought. 1x M.2 for Windows, 1x M.2 for Games and 2x SATA in RAID1 is completely enough.
2TB because games already need a lot to get updates Windows or other and possibly backups and…
The 2TB variants are often as expensive (each TB) or cheap as the 1 TB variants
However, you should not forget that it does not have to be M2 ssd. So it’s easy to retrofit.
Of course, there are too little people for the 2 TB, but nobody says that you can only have one SSD.
So a 2TB SSD from Samsung (normal version, no QVO) costs 153€ at Saturn. It’s not good enough. More than 100€. I’ll wait. Hab ne 250 SSD M2 for the system, and a 1TB Samsung SSD. Become close when installing MMOrpgs and RPGs.
I wrote “just as cheap as TB like…”
And just again I have a 1 TB Samsung was a 2 TB at 156 at 90 euros.
The TB therefore costs lt. Geizhals today’s price the 1 TB total on the TB 90 Euro and the 2 TB broadcast on TB 78 Euro/TB.
Thus, the 2TB variants on the storage space are now even cheaper, even below your 100 euros.
And there was another 2 TB-SSD for 122.
If you want to play on a SSD, there’s not that for free.
2 TB costs nothing more. Well, that’s the Sweetspot for me.
Built 6tb SSD + 8tb HDD in my Work/Gaming PC. Use the HDD for backups and outlays such as photos/documents. In addition, I also have 10tb in Raid in Nas. But with 2tb you should be good.
MFG
At least, when buying new, I would develop exactly that preferably as Gen 4 SSD
even bigger I would not grow there is price performance still too bad
I have 500gb m.2 SSD in the PC for the system, which is getting a little short. Meanwhile I would grab a 1Tb SSD, but they were too expensive at that time. Games come to the 8Tb HDD and date to the 4Tb HDD that I have additionally installed for these purposes.
If you don’t have HDD in addition, you should have at least one 1Tb SSD today, with games that might be very close.
4 TB should be sufficient if you don’t want to install and delete your games all the time.
As much as possible. Storage space is not to be replaced except by even more storage space. I’d buy the richest available SSD, two of them.
Then you don’t need a greasy SSD but a neatly built and configured NAS. There’s 160TB not a thing.
