How much does it cost to copy a car key?
Hey guys, I was wondering how much it would cost to have a 1999 BMW E46 318i key copied? I don't really care where, as long as it's reputable. Just a key, not a remote key. Thanks!

…whether you have a remote key or not, the problem lies more in the immobilizer. Since all new cars since 1998 have been required to have one, you also need a transponder for your BMW, which has to be read or programmed using the diagnostic tool. This makes things expensive. Mr. Minit could also make you a simple key, but that's no use to you. You can unlock your car, but you can't drive it…
There's a chip for narrow things. You just have to get it trained at BMW:

How much will it cost, roughly? I only have one key left, and if I lose it, it'll probably be a lot more expensive 😉
Hello MacrohardOnfire!
The ADAC says:
Replacing a mechanical key
If you own a vehicle with a traditional car key without electronics , the problem can be solved quickly and inexpensively – provided you have a spare key. Using this as a template, any locksmith can make a new key from a blank in no time. Such services can usually be found at larger supermarkets or shopping centers.
If the spare key is no longer available, you have no choice but to contact the authorized dealer or manufacturer . In this case, the entire lock may need to be replaced.
How much does it cost to copy a car key
The cost of having a locksmith copy a simple mechanical car key ranges between ten and 20 euros.
Depending on the manufacturer and vehicle model, replacing a modern car key can cost three-digit amounts – on average starting at 150 euros.
Since the replacement keys also have to be recoded and programmed, this will cost an additional 30 to 50 euros.
The cost could reach four figures if the comprehensive insurance company demands that the entire locking cylinder be replaced. The reason for this could be the potential misuse of the small mechanical emergency key, which can be "fiddled" out of even the most modern key. This would allow unauthorized persons to rob the car, which, despite all its electronics, still has a conventional door lock, while still unable to start it.
Key replacement from the online provider
Generally, prices from independent suppliers of replacement car keys seem cheaper, but there are often pitfalls. For example, the key blades may be poorly milled. Or the remote control in the blank isn't yet programmed and would have to be programmed independently using instructions from the internet. Not to mention the more complex electronics in newer cars. However, such keys can often only be coded after the manufacturer has approved them for this purpose at a cooperating workshop .

You can run to BMW quite relaxed, since the E46 has an immobilizer and this has to be programmed into the new key.
