How does a world receiver work and what can you do with it?

I've recently taken up the hobby of using a world receiver. The problem is, I have no idea what I'm actually doing. I can hear sounds or even people on some frequencies, but could someone explain all the functions to me? I know the basics, like that "SW" stands for short wave, or that "khz" stands for kilohertz. But I don't know what the difference is, or what's good for what.

I'm attaching a picture of my little world receiver so you can see what I'm working with 😅. The model is a Tecsun PL-360.

You know sound waves. There are other invisible waves called electromagnetic waves. Waves have a frequency (given in Hertz=Hz), so how often per second they swing. You can send and receive these waves to transmit information. So on the radio, satellite TV. A transmitter transmits at a specific frequency, e.g. to 89 MHz, so a wave with this frequency is used to transmit audio. If you set the receiver to 89 MHz, these audio information will be extracted. There are many stations. So that there is no chaos, it’s all regulated. So who can send on what frequency with what strength.

It is possible to divide frequencies into different sections. Short wave is the range of 3-30 MHz (l. wiki), i.e. 3-30 million. Vibrations per second. UKW is another area, etc. On the device, you can switch which area you want to receive. Then set the specific frequency within the range.

By the way, light waves are just as electromagnetic waves, only in a much higher frequency range. We have built-in receivers: eyes 😉 The different colors differed only by their frequency, i.e. the difference between green, blue, etc. is only their different frequency (simply stated). Light waves are used for information transmission, e.g. in the case of optical fiber Internet.

Microwaves, radar waves, X-rays, etc. are all forms of electromagnetic waves, only with different frequencies. If you have understood 1x in life, it can explain half life. ;

Another small supplement: For physical reasons (reflecting on superlayers of the atmosphere), short waves spread across the entire earth. I used to receive stations from Egypt, South America, China, etc., which have also produced German broadcasts – well known is the US foreign service (sends today): Voice of America.
So: On shortwave you can hear very far away transmitters.
