How does a QR code passport file work (eg Apple Wallet)?

(The background to the question is: How do I get a Deutschlandticket on my iPhone 4s iOS 9.3.6? Certainly not via an app…)

That's why I'm asking about how QR codes or "mobile tickets" work:

  1. Are QR codes from 2024 different from those from 2011? Could I add the ticket via scan?
  2. Same question about passport files – (how) can I add them?
  3. If adding is not possible: Can QR codes or passport files be converted so that they can be added?
  4. Is there an alternative to Wallet that works on iPhone 4?
  5. There are also "web apps" – is there anything there that I could use?
  6. Additional question: The Deutschlandticket on Android 11 WITHOUT registering in the Google Store or similar?

Thank you!

1. QR codes have not changed. You can also save "modern" QR codes that should have no difference, simply as a picture on your older iPhone.

I'm not so fit with Apple Wallet, especially not with the old version. Actually, Apple Wallet is not a generic QR code memory. The data type, eg Germany ticket, must be supported. Adding is not done by QR code, even if one is created at the end.

So you could try a simple scan at Apple Wallet. You'll probably get an error message.

Two. I have no idea about passport files. Since a different format is used, it will definitely not work.

3. There are 2 types on the subject of QR code from the German ticket. Once a static content remains the same for the validity period and once a dynamic content (changes every X seconds/minutes).

For static content, you could simply save a screenshot in the gallery where the QR code is on it. Controllers scan the QR code and see a valid ticket on their device. However, you need to replace the QR code monthly. For example, Google Wallet or Apple Wallet would help.

4. I've already mentioned an alternative. Depending on the traffic company where the German ticket comes from, there could also be an alternative without a smartphone. With me, you can get the DE ticket on a plastic card.

You can best see the FAQ/Info page from your transport company where you get the DE ticket. There will probably be information when a smartphone is not an option.

Five. At least in my region, the ticket, ie the QR code, can also be retrieved via a website. If your browser version is still up to date, you can use the way. When retrieving, however, you need Internet and the necessary login data. A screenshot of this would help.

6. Google Wallet as a public option under Android requires a Google login.

As with iOS, your transport company, where the ticket comes from, may also offer other or own apps where the ticket can be stored and updated. Which login is required depends on the exact app.

Android 11 should be old enough for compatibility. On iPhone, the odds with iOS 9 look rather bad.

Included: Find out with the German ticket at your transport company where you purchased the ticket.

Since the ticket is valid throughout Germany, you could also change the company. For example, one where there is a chip card/plastic card as an alternative.
