There are several options/programs for software-side encryption.

As a free open source, for example, VeraCrypt would be an option! This allows you to encrypt the complete partition and access it only after password entry.

In the case of aft from a distance, the data or even the hard disk cannot be made useless. If your password was too easy or is stolen, it can be accessed.

If you are already using the hard drive for a longer time, some data fragments might have already been placed in the non-transparent reserve sectors, you can no longer encrypt and a data recovery professional could still find it.

For example, via BitLocker.

With BitLocker, Microsoft offers a solution integrated into the Windows operating system that allows hard disks, system drives or removable disks to be securely encrypted. This keeps the data protected from theft or physical removal of a hard disk from a computer. Without the key, the data is not readable. In addition, the system can be configured so that the computer can only be started when the correct PIN is entered or a key file is provided on a removable data carrier.
