What are short chain alcohols?

In general, short-chain alcohols are liquid at room temperature and long-chain alcohols are solid. The short-chain alcohols have an approximately equal polar part, the hydroxy group, and a nonpolar part, the alkyl radical .

What are long-chain alcohols?

Cetyl alcohol is a long-chain monohydric alcohol having 16 carbon atoms. As with the alkanes, the boiling temperatures increase as the chain length increases due to the increasing van der Waals forces. Cetyl alcohol is solid at room temperature and forms white, waxy platelets.

Medium-chain alcohols with 16 and 18 carbon atoms are ubiquitous in algae and microbes. Other Alcohols the chain length is preferably numbered.
