How do I protect my cat from the toilet?
First of all: my apartment is absolutely cat-proof, except for the toilet.
My cat LOVES water and sometimes sits in the sink meowing while I run him a "bath", then he plays in it for 5-10 minutes and finally goes out to clean himself.
He's absolutely in love with the toilet. He's always there when I need to go and wants to play with the water. He's already fallen in a few times while I was standing next to him. When I'm done, I always lower the toilet lid, but I suspect he knows how to open it. He certainly knows how to open drawers and doorknobs.
How can I protect him? Unfortunately, the bathroom door doesn't close completely, and he would get it open anyway…
Thanks and best regards!
Hello
For the toilet, the child safety lock is essential: SAFELON 1 piece child-proof toilet lock, toilet seat lock for baby safety, toilet lid lock fits most toilets, no tools required (white) : Amazon.de: Baby
In any case, DO NOT let the cat drink from the litter box!
And then you should challenge and encourage your cat. Because you have a very smart, clever animal that understands a lot and learns easily. If you leave these needs unmet, it will eventually escalate into behavioral problems! Keep it occupied with games, mind games, and agility…
Playing is a basic need of our cats, and one that persists well into old age. Some cats need it more, others less. It is also important for the cat's physical, emotional, and mental well-being, and it is also great fun for us cat owners. Of course, the intensity decreases with age. Younger cats play much more often, for longer, and with more enthusiasm than older or elderly cats. But even the very old ones still play, as long as they are mentally and physically well. Due to all the sensory overload and their prey-catching adventures, cats that are allowed outside without supervision play less than cats that are kept indoors or even cats with secured outdoor access.
Cats that aren't keen on playing should definitely be seen by a veterinarian for a check-up. A reluctance to play could also indicate a health problem. A cat that feels physically weak or unwell, for example, due to kidney failure, an infection, or pain, simply won't want to put its energy into boisterous play.
Important: Daily play with your cat is a must ! PLEASE take your time. Play consciously and don't give up right away. Remember, cats are ambush predators and will initially observe quietly, giving the impression that the cat is just watching you disinterestedly. But then, all of a sudden, the cat will suddenly "attack."
The toys should be put away every now and then, for a while. You can rotate some of the toys around to keep things interesting.
Play in cats is divided into different categories:
Solitary play/object play = games where the cat can occupy itself alone, with itself or objects, without other cats or humans.
Social play = games where the cat plays with other cats, humans or dogs and other living beings.
Mood = pay attention to your cat's mood. If it's lying in its favorite spot, dozing, it's less likely to want to play. If the cat is eating, the chances of playing are also slim.
Cover = Cats are ambush hunters (dogs, for example, are chase hunters), meaning they lie in wait for their prey for a long time, silent and motionless, until they make a targeted pounce. Good cover is important when sitting and lying in wait. At home, cover for hunting/ambushing can be a fold in a carpet, a couch cushion, a doorframe, or even a cardboard box.
Undisturbed = in a multi-cat household, please ensure that each cat gets its own individual attention.
Duration/Frequency = Generally, small play sessions spread throughout the day are beneficial. However, due to school, work, etc., this isn't always possible. Therefore, you should play intensively with your cat 4-6 times in the evening for about 15 minutes.
The right toy = Toys should resemble potential prey. You'll need to experiment a bit to find what your cat likes. For many, mice, balls, or cat teasers are enough. Others love activity toys like laser pointers, moving mice, Kitty Boinks, ball runs, play towers, puzzle boards, ball pits, and the like! There are also many great toys for cats on the market these days, and you can even make some yourself.
Do you know agility or clicker training?
Clicker training, also known as agility, has become very popular with cats as a way to learn small tricks and exercises. Birga Dexel, a well-known TV personality (Dog, Cat, Mouse), has even published a book on the subject. There are many great videos and suggestions on YouTube.
As long as the animal is having fun, it doesn't have to fear punishment if something goes wrong, you don't overwhelm the animal, and you also give it time off, it's a really good idea. We've even taught some of our five furry friends tricks. Since the clickers are too loud for us, we've done it using a command-reward system, which works very well.
Our Maui says "sit" and "stay." Maui can "roll" and so on.
Here is our Felix, who sadly passed away in November 2023, with my daughter: https://youtu.be/FDBIFQ0dmxk
This type of training always involves rewards. If the trick isn't done, there's no treat. You shouldn't overfeed your cat. Do you understand?!

Our cats also like to climb in, but to drink. There’s nothing like that. But I find it unhygienic.
I’d put something heavy on the toilet lid. If you have small weights or short weights, I’d put them on the lid. You can easily remove this yourself and do not have to cope with any construction effort.
I have one or the other seats here, especially in the office, where no place is desired due to the hair. In these places there is a book which makes the place unpopular for the cats.
By the way, we have two cats and they both like the toilet. I therefore believe that this point cannot be justified by loneliness. In the worst case, you have 2 water lovers 😅
Much success and report once you’ve found something successful 😃
Can you attach a weight to the toilet lid? Then he doesn’t get him anymore, and for you, every toilet walk for training…
Otherwise maybe with distraction? A small tub with water next to the toilet, for example. Maybe that’s enough to lose interest in the toilet.
Kiss him for me.
That’s what I thought. Do you think I could screw up a 5kg weight disc?
he was just “bathing” while I was cooking as soon as he is dry I cuddle him:D
Screwing on may not be necessary. If you can attach hooks or angles to it so that it can’t push it down, it would be enough.
Yay, thanks 😺
Make yourself woodcutter where you’re going over it, and he can’t bring up more.
10 years ago the problem and that helped
In fact, I’ve already suggested it! My father refused to implement it…
This is a lot of work and costs almost nothing but very effective 🙂
Had only frame and pushed over toilet where hanger could only raise 2cm lid and then nix left more. You can also make a nice functional shelf but you must also move for you so I had kept it very easy
Was that a real shelf? Or just a |-| frame?
Child security. 100 per there is something like that for the klo
She doesn’t stop at the ceramic bowl of the toilet, I tried
Tape?
Other cat? Can be that this behavior comes due to boredom
I don’t know how long it works:/ that can be 99 times good and then not
can you possibly distract him with nem drinking water fountain?
also at the bottom
There’s almost nothing that doesn’t exist:
