How do I get from Germany to Switzerland?

I've never done that before and tried the Flixbus website, but to no avail. I'd like to take the ICE, so the best option would be from Nuremberg Central Station to Altdorf 6460, Switzerland.

Would like to be with another adult person (I am also an adult)

Outward journey: 30.12.24

Return journey: 03.01.25

What should I do if the ICE train doesn't work? Can I take a Flixbus or something similar? What's the fastest way?

Just as an example:

As mentioned, this is an example. You can also select other locations/cities in Germany for departure. The same applies to arrival and the date. DB also offers offers if you want to travel by ICE. You just have to look carefully.

On Bahn.de, connections are displayed when I search for connections from Nuremberg Central Station to Altdorf UR, Bahnhof Ost.

  • It's best for the passenger to book their ticket separately. Otherwise, if the person named on the ticket isn't there, the entire ticket may become invalid.
  • Find out how flexible you are if you book a return trip on one ticket. If necessary, book the outbound and return journeys separately. Saver fares are usually limited to specific trains.
  • It's possible that the train ticket isn't valid for the entire route due to a "partial fare" (I see that as public transport at the end, which isn't a train). If necessary, find out how to buy tickets there beforehand. In Hamburg, for example, this is sometimes only possible via the app or their prepaid card.

Of course, you can also travel the route by train; it takes about 6.5 hours. You'll then have an ICE train for at least part of the journey.

There are various travel routes, usually with an ICE to Munich, then with an EC (EuroCity train) to Zurich, then with a Swiss IC or IR either directly to Altdorf or first to Zug and then with a Swiss S-Bahn to Altdorf.

But there are also connections with IC to Karlsruhe, then with ICE to Basel, from there either with a Swiss IC or IR directly to Altdorf or another change in Arth-Goldau.

Otherwise, if you find a connection that suits you, you can try splitting it up. You might then be offered special fares for partial sections, making it cheaper. However, there may be disadvantages in terms of compensation if you lose your connection.

From Nuremberg, you can take the ICE to Munich and then continue on to Zurich. From there, you can travel to Altdorf.

Alternatively, you can take the train to Augsburg, from Augsburg to Buchloe, and then on to Zurich. From Zurich, you can get to Altdorf.

From Nuremberg via Munich it takes about 7 hours, via Augsburg and Buchloe about 6:30 hours.

Have a nice trip 😊

Hi, you may have to enter the route of a larger city near Altdorf at bahn.de.

From there, continue by local transport or taxi.

Nuremberg – Lucerne should go to bahn.de.

From Nuremberg, the fastest train connection is by train, with a change in Munich to a EuroCity. The Flixbus is cheaper. If you're flying, you'll have to figure out how to get from Zurich Airport to Altdorf. It's certainly the most expensive option.

You'll definitely find the Flixbus website. Ultimately, you'll have to choose and pay for the connection that's right for you.

Not environmentally friendly and probably more expensive. It shouldn't take much time.

Especially since it only takes you to Zurich.
