I burned paper in a stainless steel bowl and now it's sooty.
How do I get rid of it?
I have another bowl in which I burned turpentine and now there is a pitch-like sticky mass with soot left over.

you can rinse the stainless steel bowl and then clean it normally with sink and a steel sponge (if necessary).
In the case of the adhesive, I would wipe out the mass with a zewa, if necessary take ethanol or acetone (is in nail varnish remover) for dissolving, so it may be better off. The Zewa cloths then dispose in the household waste. Stuffy while you do that, or do it directly on the balcony.
