You need two things:

  1. (Optional) A domain, i.e. the address at which your website is to be reached. Theoretically you don’t need it, but then the website can only be accessed via the IP (i.e. a number sequence), and you can hardly remember it.
  2. A web space, i.e. a web server on which you can place the website and which is accessible from the outside. There’s something about web hosting providers.

I host my websites at Netcup. There are also offers with a domain.

In which you buy / rent space on the network and host your website there on the server – you do this with a web host.
