How can I learn English better?

Good day,

I'm taking an advanced English course and am in 11th grade. Since I have an oral and a written exam for my Abitur, I wanted to ask how I can improve my English outside of class.

-How much do English-language series and films earn? With or without English/German subtitles?

-Read books aloud? Google every word you don't know, or just keep reading?

-Listen to/read English news?

-English podcasts/audiobooks?

Which of these things is best or brings the most benefits?

And do you have any other good resources for learning English? Both written and spoken?

Thank you very much for the tips.

YouTube videos in English are recommended. You could also consider participating in a summer camp or other event to improve your English.

Hey, I did my English Abitur this year but only in the basic course (10 points)

So to your questions:

-How much do English-language series and films earn? With or without English/German subtitles?

It definitely helped me a lot. You can do it with or without subtitles; I'd say it depends on how "professionally" the English content is presented.

-Read books aloud? Google every word you don't know, or just keep reading?

It didn't help me that much, so I'd recommend writing little stories myself, or maybe short stories.

-Listen to/read English news?

-English podcasts/audiobooks?

In any case, both are very good because you also get an insight into the technical language.

I think that in principle everything is useful.

You don't necessarily have to read the books aloud. I think that's more useful at the beginning. General pronunciation should already be given by the advanced English class, and then unfamiliar words should work well. I'd recommend setting the subtitles to English if you'd like them. It's not necessarily translated 1:1, so the German subtitles aren't particularly helpful. And here, too, I would assume that German subtitles aren't needed for someone who's in the advanced English class. If words are missing, you can usually figure them out of the context. We once saw a film in class, and quite early on (I mean, from grade 8 onward), there were only English subtitles, and that worked quite well. (And I was rather mediocre at English back then.)

Not necessarily. I spent a year in Canada myself. Both before and after, I kept coming across unfamiliar words. Especially later on, in technical terms. However, you eventually develop a certain feel for words, because certain letter combinations are usually pronounced a certain way. And if you're unsure about a word, you can always listen to it.
