Helmet broken?

Hello, I threw my friend's motorcycle helmet at him. He immediately freaked out that it cost €120… I'm supposed to pay for it… But the helmet has no external damage, nor any internal damage. He claims there's a lining inside that you can't see, and it now has a dent… When I asked him what was bothering him about it, he explained that if his motorcycle is involved in an accident, he wouldn't cover it if the helmet already had previous damage…

Overall, I don't know what to say. I promised to pay for the helmet. However, there's no obvious damage, and the story doesn't seem plausible. Do you know if it's true that there are helmets that crack on the inside in some invisible way?

They say that a helmet is no longer to be used as soon as it falls down from a meter height. The background is that the helmet gets microcracked and then no longer properly protects in an accident.

Yes, it also depends on how the helmet is damaged after the fall

Who says that?
“man” has never said that to me, and I have been driving motor since 1978.

What did he like? on parquet? on concrete? on asphalt? on wood? straight? oblique? to meet a statement is bullshit.

what I can confirm, however:

“man” likes to sell you a new helmet when you tell them your old fell down.

The manufacturers advise that you should change the helmet after it has fallen down, as the protection is no longer given.
I saw Schuberth helmets that fell from the handlebar. They were gone.

So.

if a helmet falls down from a meter (from the hand), the maximum is the color off or a scratch in it. that’s a shame, and you’re responsible for it.

that the helmet would no longer protect only the case if:

  1. the outer shell would be damaged. then this would be to be seen, because the break does not break without the overlying spachtel or lacquer having a tear. this applies above all to gfk or carbon fibre helmets. is a polycarbonate helmet, i.e. a plastic dish, you can see it immediately, which are usually not even painted.
  2. If the inner life has experienced a deformation, say if you have an accident with a helmet, then you bump somewhere against the helmet, and your head bangs inside against the styrofoam filling. when the then dipped, it is clear that the helmet no longer protects so well during the second impact. but that only happens when a head is in the helmet. he just falls down, the inner life is completely unpartisan.

you can offer your friend that he lets the helmet ring.
we’ve done this before at a gfk helmet that had no direct impact, but had a contact with the curbs, in a crash on the racetrack.
the helmet was good and expensive, and I wanted to know if I could use it further. the fibers were clearly visible on the X-ray image, and there were no breaks or anomalies. it was only the spachtel layer and the lacquer was peeled off. I have been using the helmet for years.

I therefore suspect that the purchase of a new helmet should be forced on you here, which is most likely not necessary.

two things you can do now:

you have a liability insurance (frag your parents, maybe the one in which you are included) paid them if you break something. then he has to leave the helmet there.
if you give him the money directly, you can also request his old helmet. (even if neither you nor the insurance can use it, it’s bad for him if he only wants to withdraw money and use the old helmet.

if nothing can be seen outside, he must prove the harm. there is no obligation for you to pay anything.

and a helmet for 120,- is not really expensive or of good quality. that starts at about 500,- (only noticed by the way)

So a helmet protects primarily by absorbing the forces when falling.

By hitting the helmet from the inside.

If a helmet falls down without anything in it, the foam will not be pressed together.

So as long as there is no harm on the shell, nix should have happened.

I don’t understand why your buddy is so excited about throwing a Billo helmet down. Especially since the reason is funny. I would rather consider that the helmet no longer protects so well.
