HDD hard drive not connected = damage?
Good day,
My question is, can an HDD be damaged if it's not connected for a long time (1-2 months)? My problem is that the hard drive I have for storing all my university stuff, photos, videos, etc. is slowly giving up the ghost (it's got over 42,000 hours on it, so it deserves it^^) and since I'm building a new PC soon anyway, I was going to buy a new hard drive straight away. However, until then, I'd like to disconnect this one from the PC so that it doesn't get damaged any further before I can transfer the data.
And a second question that goes with that: is it difficult to connect it every few days? Since I have a lot of things stored on it, I might have to do it every now and then.
This might be a really stupid question, but I'd rather ask.
Hello,
I have all stored my old HDDs on the shelf or basement. If I put them on sporadically, they’ll work 1a.
There is no danger in your project. For you, a NAS may be a sensible purchase.

Nope. A hard drive is used when you use it, but not if you don’t use it. Both scenarios do not pose a problem.
Thank you for the quick answer 🙂

If there is no problem, however, it keeps away from much movement because otherwise electrostatic charge can build up and it should be noted:
hard drive + electrostatic charge = 💩 (all will be unloaded or deleted)
Good night!
Had to be installed in front of them and only pull the plugs so I can connect them again.
Jap this is supi… I had mine lying on the table and then there was a lot of exercise + rug and that was then when I rebuilt it.
School items from 5-10. Class all highlights, learning lists, presentations, handouts + a pair of passwords and games…
Uff, yes, that sounds really stupid, hopefully, the files were not so important.
Well, the data doesn’t seem particularly important anyway.
The HDD only goes “caputt” if you physically destroy or use it. By not using the plate, nothing happens. So you can leave them as long as you like.
