Have your trailer hitch registered with the TÜV?

I found a tow bar for my Beetle 1300 built in 1967 with 40 hp

It says that a TÜV registration is not necessary.

Does that mean I can just mount it on my (o\_/o) and then drive off with a trailer?

In principle, that's correct. The TÜV inspection and registration in the vehicle's title and registration certificate were abolished years ago.

The tow bar must be type-approved and bear an "E" mark. I don't know whether it's still mandatory to carry the installation instructions (which contain the approval number) with the vehicle. But even if it is, they're only a few sheets of paper, and they fit in the glove compartment of a Beetle.

You only need to have the ABE with you

I'd at least keep a copy in the glove compartment. And of course, make sure you're allowed to tow the trailer with your darling!
