Did you enjoy doing internships during your studies/school?

I had to complete a mandatory three-Monday internship. I was in auditing.

I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped. I just sat around and mostly chose to work from home, as it was more relaxed than in the office with annoying colleagues.

The internship was hell because I had to get used to working from 8-16:30 (I never had that before)

I thought the salary was fair, though. Most people don't get paid anything, and I just got €15 an hour. It's not much, but it's better than nothing.

However, I would never have done the internship if it wasn't a mandatory internship.

During my internship, I simply applied the theory. I find theory more exciting than practice.

My question:

Did you enjoy doing internships during your studies/school or was it not so great?

I don’t think it’s okay that you can use interns like this and pay under the minimum wage.

I did two internships during my school and had a lot of fun.

I enjoyed my compulsory internship during my studies and could learn a lot – even if I had not complained about at least a small amount!

You didn’t get any money for it?

No, this is common in many industries. And in the compulsory internship, I had to decide if a) in an area that really interests me, where I can really learn something, but don’t get any money or b) an area that is rewarded, but not so irritating.

That is not true at all, at least not in Austria. I have, in fact, represented a colleague who was in long-term illness.

I was told at school that they’ll have to pay once you don’t just watch.

I found the internships as a whole. Finally, you can apply practically what I had learned in theory. Of course you get boring Hanlanger tasks in the meantime, but to some extent I found it okay. I’ve learned something everywhere and was allowed/must do it right.

I was in

  • a food laboratory,
  • the Site Engineering department of a pharmaceutical company,
  • the engineering department of a refrigeration technology company,
  • the production of a metal and electrical plant and
  • the training workshop of a metalworking plant.

I had done two pupil internships in public service. Once at the tax office and once at the prosecutor’s office where my mother works as an attorney.

But sorting much more than files and mail, as well as easy tasks in the field of enforcement (reviewing enforcement requests or open arrest warrants, etc.) was unfortunately not possible for me by both authorities due to the lack of legal knowledge and the (yet) non-existent official status for performing high-level tasks.

I was very interested in both, but I did not do an education or dual study there. But I have remained true to the öD and became an official in the elevated customs service at a customs office.

Sorting files and mail had experience before the start of my first internship, as these were my main tasks in my side job at a courtmate since I was 13.

It was always interesting and something other than school. And when I did all the internships, I also have a dual study. All right, yeah.

Best regards 🙂
