The time system is old. Very old. There were 60 potencies for whatever reason.

Milliseconds are completely new and are therefore based on the 10th potency. 1000s.. Whatever you want to see. It is also absolutely unimportant for ordinary people and interesting for science. That’s why you can split this second into 1000 parts instead of taking 60 again.

From milliseconds, there’s 1,000 per second.

See the Mathematics Book.

“The classification of minutes and seconds in 60 units is based on the Babylonian numerical system used more than 4,000 years ago. The Babylonians used a basic 60-number representation, probably because 60 is a highly complex number and has many dividers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, 60). This division makes mathematical calculations easier in such a system.

The decision for 60 minutes per hour and 60 seconds per minute was probably made on the basis of this historical base-60 number illustration. When the modern time system was developed, this division remained.

The division of the second into 100 milliseconds, however, is part of the metric decimal system based on the base 10. This system has prevailed in many scientific and technical applications, as it allows simple conversions and calculations. Although the metric system in everyday life was not taken over for minutes and seconds, it found input into smaller units such as milliseconds.

All in all, the various divisions reflect historical developments and practical considerations that have emerged over time.”

That’s what ChatGPT spits on me.

Apart from having 1000 milliseconds for a second, ChatGPT has an exceptional right here.

The first sentence is already wrong, hours and minutes are divided into 60 units. The Eloquence or Better Swaziness is available.

the prefix Milli means a thousandth.

There are 1000 milliseconds because this is specified by the “mill” (=thousandth). Everything else is just defined time units.

Actually, the milliseconds even have 1000 within a second.

1second=1000 milliseconds btw, not 100…..

These are centiseconds

Millisecond means 1/1000 second. Milli is always 1/1000, just like in millimeter, milliliter, milligram etc.

You could also Centiology use. For ski races, the runtimes are usually given rounded to this accuracy.
