Create a good fictional character?

Hey, I started a fanfiction for fun, but I'm having trouble creating my own characters.

Question 1:

What should this/these all have? Aspects I should pay attention to?

Question 2:

And should it have a dark (not too far-fetched!) but incredibly plausible and authentic secret? Do you have any ideas?

Example: A boy has a secret: he's being beaten by his dad, but he doesn't tell anyone because he's uncomfortable. That's why he's an asshole. (I'm not looking for the boring cliché everyone uses. (And no illnesses.)

Does anyone have a totally brilliant but absurd idea that a character has as a secret? 😉 Because I want to stay realistic, but still come up with something new that no one else would think of. ^^√ and that will bond two characters together later because they become closer because of it.

Spoiler alert: it's supposed to be a romance. And the female character is supposed to be more interesting than just the typical pretty, nice, sweet, and well-behaved character.

Best wishes and thank you for your creative ideas. XD

Start with what you know.

Parents, siblings, where and how raised, what experiences have been made, etc

The more detailed you can describe your characters, the easier it will be for you to develop them. Play small scenarios to see how behave and turn on the adjusting screws until you like it.

The rest comes with time.

I’ve been playing Pen and Paper for years. As a player and leader. And I read a lot. I can shake a bunch of characters out of my sleeve.

Make a checklist, or get a blank character sheet from the net and fill it out as well as possible. As a help for the beginning and as a basic framework, this is very useful.

If I’m looking for a good idea, I’ll do the following:

I’m writing exactly 10 ideas. Exactly 10! No more, no less. With these 10 ideas there is sometimes a very good one or at least one that I really like. I’ll take this one and keep it up. Try it.

If that doesn’t help, make a metainterview with your character. Do as if he sat against you and just ask him for his darkest secret. He’ll tell you.

Good luck.
