GPT or MBR partitioning style for the second partition?
Hello, I'm a little confused and hope one of you can help me.
I bought a new computer and want to split the SSD drive. Currently, as stated by the manufacturer, only the C drive exists.
I've read a lot online, but I'm unsure which style to choose. According to the internet, GPT is recommended.
What do I have to consider?
Hello,
nowadays you convert to GPT.
Unless the old legacy mode would be activated in BIOS.
Normal is the UEFI mode.
So if your PC should be older than 10 years.
You can look at this in the BIOS.
A possible partitioning is then made when formatting.

Win11 is only available in UEFI mode install. The hard disk /SSD will be Automatic the GPT style formatted.
For Win10, which is usually also installed in UEFI mode, the also.
Note: If there is a “EFI system partition” there is the Windows in UEFI mode installed and the hard disk/SSD in GPT style formatted.
If there’s an operating system, why partition? That’s just insane? Best regards
No! – It may be useful to place its “own files” on a separate partition or hard drive/SSD (D:).
I did it that way. – Advantage: I can reinstall Windows without having to secure my own files. – On data(D:) they are largely safe
Is the SSD/NVMe still empty? Which operating system should be installed on it? How big is the SSD/NVMe? How do you want to split the space on the SSD/NVMe?
The SSD is installed and since the computer is new, only the operating system Win 11 is on it. Now I want a “division” for my data. I thought about 150 GB for the LW C. Recommended about 70. I created a partion under Win 10 years ago – it’s been a bit and then you didn’t ask for any style. What do I have to consider? Can I break something if I choose the wrong one?
So that the drive is edged after a few patchdays and no longer goes?
By the way: If you want to maintain Windows installation on the disk, you already have more than one partition on it. Windows usually installs at least two partitions. (Bootmanager and the rest.) And in pre-installed computers there is also usually a recovery partition on it.
So you should first reduce the partition for drive C so that you could create a new partition in the then freed memory area.
And since the decision MBR or GPT is not made per partition, but per physical storage medium, the subject is already done.
