It depends on the forest that is at stake. Near a big city, I’d be more concerned than in the country. Forest itself is not dangerous when there are safe ways and you do not run a wildsau over the path that is just leading freshlings. In lonely forests there are usually no robbers. I keep wondering that you’re afraid of the forest. Probably this is a human urinary instinct from the past. A rapist does not sit in the forest for hours and waits for his opportunity. The forest is probably more harmless than the city with a lot more inhabitants and potential “fines”.
A pocket knife is about the stupidest thing you can take with you. If someone from behind you are really ready to drill a blade through your body. So I would have a bit of conscientiousness and this hesitation can be decisive. The attacker may still use your knife against it. On the other hand, a mobile phone, pepper spray and self-defense could be helpful in such a case.
