Gliding as a hobby, am W14?

I've been thinking about taking up gliding. My grandma lives in a town with an airfield, about a half-hour drive from home. My parents would pay for it and probably even take me there. My grandma said there are several young people in the club, so that's not a problem. Since you can start at 14 and I'm perfectly healthy (no complaints), I wanted to start in the spring. BUT the weekends are ACTUALLY family time, with a few exceptions. I was wondering if

1. Flights also take place during the week,

2. It's cool because I imagine it like this: I love the sky and the wind and have dreamed of flying since I was little, I just didn't know that gliding was possible.

3. Can the theory lessons also be held during the week / in winter

4. Tell us a bit about your experiences (motor pilots are welcome too)

5 . How long does it take until you can fly yourself

6. Obviously, I still can't drive, but I've seen that even a flight requires several drivers, etc. If someone started driving in their teens, did you also learn to drive then? It's not public traffic, so it's okay.

7. If you have anything else to say that could help me, that would be nice 😉 .

thanks in advance

I can only tell you about my club. This can then be different from club to club.

My parents would pay

Many clubs now offer a “Schnupperjahr”. You can fly for a flat-rate, with us 250,- for youth, all year round incl. Windstarts, flight instructors, aircraft rental, association fee etc. pp.

There are a few costs for documents. Flyer doctor etc.

My grandma has said that there are several youthfuls in the club,

With us in the club there is even a fairly active youth group.

1. Also flying under the week,

No. Sailing is a team sport. For wind operation, up and down etc. you need at least 6 people. They’re just getting them together at the WE. The whole effort would not be worthwhile for the evening. On Saturday the operation starts from 12 to 18.00 (or longer) and on Sunday from 10:00 to evening.

It’s cool because I’m just pretending, I love the sky and the wind and dream since I’m little davo

You’re right, that’s a beautiful hobby. As flight students, most flights are still relatively short, but then you make several a day. It is important to master the start and landing perfectly.

3. Can you also keep the theoretical lessons under the week / in winter

With us, the underlying theory takes place together with the motor pilots in winter on Saturdays and once a week in the evening. You can also purchase an app for online learning.

4. Tell me about your experiences

You have to experience it yourself…

5 . How long does it take to fly Selber

That depends on the talent. As a rule, most of them will be able to participate regularly in the beautiful weekends until late summer. that they may make their first solo flight. The rest until appearance are created by most of them next year.

If, logically, it is still possible to drive a car, but it has seen that several drivers are needed for a ride.

I don’t understand. with us and most clubs, it is so that the sailing flight is regarded as a private ground and therefore younger than 14 years old all cars of the association can drive on the grounds. For the later driver’s license you already save a few driving hours when you control the car.

The website says that you cannot have an epilepsy.

Logical, but this is very rare and if you have never had an epileptic attack, the problem does not matter. There are a number of other reasons for exclusion, such as a kapuute eye, lack of hearing on an ear, color blindness etc. pp.

but is meant to look into the sun because I am sensitive

No. But sunglasses, sunscreen and cap are mandatory.

ABER the weekends are EIGENTLICH Family time

Contrary to many prejudices, sailing flies don’t even cost so much money, but it costs time. ..but only in the summer and only in beautiful weather. In the summer and/or Pentecost holidays there are usually 1 to 2 weeks of camps. It’s going very fast. However, there is no obligation to participate in flight camps or weekends. If you have time, you come to the airfield and then you will see how to organize it. On flying weekends you should plan for flying at least Saturday or Sunday if you want to get ahead and fly alone (which is possible from 14 years).

I’d love you to do that.

To control and understand flying is already great, but sailing flies are far more than that.

But it also extends to a particular extent the understanding of weather phenomena, the influence of humidity on the thermal.

By the way, I am not a sailplane myself, the opportunity has not turned out. But I would like to support you if you get the chance.

Normally, the flight is mostly on weekends or in summer evenings. Why? Because the flight instructors don’t make it general, but in their spare time.

At the clubs I know, you are also expected to work, so the hours of flight are also favourable.

So if you reserve the weekends for family time, this could be problematic with the school.

The theory is in the evening or at the weekend, justification see above.

that several drivers etc. are needed for one ride. If jmd started in youth, did you learn to drive?

What the sailing flying has to do with “driving” is coming to me now.

that you must not have epilepsy. I didn’t,

You don’t know. Or have you been tested for it before? Just because you haven’t had a seizure so far doesn’t mean you can’t be triggered.

The courses last between 3 and 6 months, when you have your first solo flight, you can’t say a flat-rate, your flight instructor will give you free if he thinks that is correct.

so I meant that someone must be able to drive

You can learn that very quickly….and until then you can drive others. Especially the young people almost asked who to drive. Sometimes you can have the impression that they prefer to drive cars than they fly.

Hello!

It sounds great that you are interested in sailing flying – especially when your family and grandma support you! I like to answer your questions and give you some extra tips:

1. Are you flying under the week?

It depends on the club. In many clubs, there are more helpers and flight instructors on weekends. But in the summer months (e.g. during the holidays) there are often also flight camps or training periods during the week. Ask directly at the club!

Two. Is it cool?

Yes, absolutely! Flying is a great experience. You are the pilot, control the plane alone and experience the sky and the wind close – it is difficult to describe, but incredibly impressive. If you’ve always dreamed of flying, it’s a perfect way to make this dream come true.

3. Theory lessons under the week/winter?

Yes, theory lessons often take place in winter, often under the week in the evening or on weekends. The winter is ideal to learn all the theoretical basics so you can start directly with the flights in spring.

4. Experience?

I wrote on my blog about training in associations and why it is so special. There is often a great community, especially among young people. Look at my article: Flight school or air club – What does it fit you?.

Five. How long does it take to fly yourself?

This depends on how often you flee, but most are creating the first single flight after 30–60 starts. It can be within a few months if you practice regularly.

6. Learn driving on the airfield?

Yeah, that’s actually a big advantage! Many young people learn on the airfield, by car to pull the airplanes or to use the winds. Since it is not a public transport space, this is allowed and a huge fun! 😊

7. My tip:

Just take a look at the club. Many clubs offer the opportunity to join for a day and get to know the atmosphere. On my website you will find a map with over 450 flight schools and clubs if you are looking for the right club: Map of air schools and associations.

Flying is a great hobby that not only brings you fun, but also strengthens self-confidence and responsibility. Much success – and if you have any questions, please feel free! 😊
