Is there a study that shows that people with higher education are less likely to apply for citizen's allowance?

I need it for a school project, but unfortunately I can't find anything.

Or in general, that people who have studied, for example, have a lower chance of becoming unemployed?

You don’t land directly at the Jobcenter / Citizens Money as a unemployed person. Before, there is the normal employment office and unemployment benefit 1 (ALG1).

In the last 30 months at least 12 months have been paid to unemployment insurance. This does not necessarily require employment. In the case of temporary employment contracts, half of the time is sufficient. Anyone who has paid 12 months (reduced 6) is entitled to 6 months ALG1, who has paid 24 months (reduced 12) is entitled to 12 months ALG1. The ALG1 payout amount is approximately 60% of the last net salary (in the case of children 68%).

Someone who is well-trained and deserves better will probably get a sufficient ALG1 and will find a new attitude within the reference and thus will not get any points of contact with the citizen’s money.

There are currently 5.5 million citizens’ allowances. Of these, 1.6 million unemployed are fully available to the labour market. This also includes those who increase their ALG1. A substantial part of the 1.6 million unemployed usually receives only a grant from the public money and not the full rate.

Based on the available data, however, some general tendencies can be seen:

  • Unemployed: Unemployed persons are the largest group of citizens’ benefits. In Germany, the unemployment rate was 5.3% in April 2024.
  • Single parent: In comparison with the average population, single persons are disproportionately affected by poverty and are therefore another large group of citizens’ pension beneficiaries.
  • Low-skilled: People with low qualifications often have difficulties finding a well-paid job and are therefore more vulnerable to poverty and unemployment.
  • People with migration background: People with a migration background are statistically more affected by unemployment and poverty than people with no migration background.
  • Long-term unemployment: The long-term unemployed, i.e. those who are unemployed for more than one year, often have difficulties in getting back to the labour market and are therefore particularly dependent on citizens’ money.

This is not directly related to education. I know many with a higher degree of education that are nothing but unemployed because they don’t want to work.

An academic does not automatically have a job or You want to.
