Is there a rule for this?
2. Out of caution, he took a different route.
I don't understand the combination of "one" and the article "other".
So, I understand that it's in the accusative case. But what rule allows it to be written like that? One way and the other.
You mean because Other often counted to the (indefinite) pronouns and therefore could actually take over the position of the article or should not be like an adjective between article and noun?
I honestly never thought about it – and I didn’t notice it until your question… I can only answer you from the stand:
There are always cases in languages in general and word types in particular that are more prototypical for something than others; So there are quite cases where something can be untypical, just like here. Ander… seems to be somewhere between pronouns and adjectives, so has characteristics of both.
Generally speaking languages/grams are not black and white; there will always be grayscales. Even if people who, for example, call at language counselling points who never want to hear how the experience shows. 😀
“One” is an indefinite article, and “other” is an adjective.
Think like Schiller and you’ll understand.
In German there are 3 adjectives that you have to learn as a foreigner. As a native speaker, you usually do that automatically, unless you have grown up in an environment where people (parents, friends, etc.) do not speak correctly.
Here is the table, please click to enlarge:
Nominative: another way (like “a big dog”)
Rechargeable: one-en another way (like “a big dog”)
In the battery, both the indefinite article gets the ending (in the case of masculine subjects, i.e. the path, the dog,…) and the adjective (big > large, ander(e) > others).
I see a big dog.
He’s going another way.
“other” is an adjective, “a” of the articles.
You can say:
“He took a way” – “a” is an indefinite article.
And then an adjective is added to the “path”, which describes the way more precisely: the path is “other”.
Other example:
“He took the narrow way” – that would be the same constellation, but with certain article.
You can replace “other” with other (😅) adjectives, then it might make sense again:
– “a beautiful path”
– “a faster way”
– “a new way”
Are you okay?
